LUCY SEXTON

Lucy Mary (Ahlers) Sexton, age 93, joined our Heavenly Father on December 8, 2020, surrounded by her loving family at her home. She was born May 26, 1927, at home in rural Dumfries, Minnesota, daughter of Henry and Regina (Schuth) Ahlers. She was married to Patrick J. Sexton on September 21, 1948at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha, MN.
Lucy was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to an abundance of family. She loved us all and had a wonderful life. We are all blessed to have had her for so many years keeping us all in line. She loved all the time she spent with her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids and all her time spent with family and friends. She loved baking, making meals for family, gardening, playing cards (especially Euchre, 500, and 500 Rummy), “old time” music and dancing (Waltzes). She was a life-long active member of the Catholic parishes of St. Patrick’s in West Albany and St. Mary of the Lake in Lake City. She was member of the Millville American Legion Auxiliary, the Council of Catholic Women, and several card clubs.
Lucy was a caring, hard working woman who was always up for a game of cards. She routinely got the better of her opponents, sometimes in an uncanny fashion. Lucy enjoyed large family gatherings, especially around the holidays and week-long trips up north in the summer. She was the consummate hostess, making everyone’s favorite foods and ensuring no one left hungry. The family always enjoyed gathering for Lucy’s birthday, which became “just another day.”
Lucy and Patrick raised their family on a dairy farm near Millville. Lucy took care of the home and family in addition to helping around the farm. She raised chickens and sold the eggs. After Patrick’s untimely death, Lucy and her children summoned the strength to run the farm and raise the next generation. Lucy’s strong faith has been a bedrock for the family.
Lucy was a loving mother to Jean (Jim) Jahn, Donald (Lea) Sexton, Linda (Glenn) Schmidt, Dwaine (Dawn) Sexton, Mary (Dan) Christy, Denise (Kent) Sackreiter, and Donna (Bill) McNary; a wonderful grandmother to 35 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 7 step great-grandchildren, and 2 step great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Frances Brinkman; sisters-in-law Marcella Ahlers, Marcella (Tony) Wallerich (Schmidt), and Sharon Dick; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Patrick (1972), grandson Samuel Sexton; great-grand daughter, Andrea White-Schmidt, and great-grandsons Joseph Sackreiter and Bryson Schmidt; her parents Henry and Regina Ahlers; brothers Joseph (Alta), John, Herman (Betty), Walter Ahlers (Doris) and sisters Margaret Marston (Les), Helen Lindgren (Ralph), Doretta Reitmen (Walt); in-laws Richard and Mary Sexton, Rose and Ferdinand Franke, Robert and Margaret Sexton, Mildred and John Dick, Irene and John Tritchler, Lawrence and Dorothy Sexton, Delores and Vincent Passe/Walter Books, Thomas Schmidt, Frances and Donald Dick; and several nieces and nephews.
A Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, West Albany, rural Millville with Father Matthew Fasnacht officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A celebration of her life will be held a later date.
We want to thank all those who have provided loving care to mom especially these past two years: daughter-in-law Dawn and son Dwaine who didn’t hesitate and warmly invited her into their home; all her children who supplemented care along the way; loving care givers Donna Bedtke and Amy Cronin; RN Kiara Mauseth and the rest of the Mayo Hospice team who helped support the system in place.
Mom’s wit and laughter brightened the lives of any who knew her. Her strong work ethic and generous nature came naturally; characteristics which were passed on to her family. Her silent strength was a rock and foundation, a pillar of support, and the strongest person we knew. She will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church/St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church https://stmarysandstpatricksmn.org/online-giving; or Mayo Hospice https://philanthropy.mayoclinic.org/donateMC.
