Thunder girls hoops win first Dairyland Conference game

OSSEO - The Osseo-Fairchild High School; Girls Basketball team won its first Dairyland Conference contest since 1986, rejoining the league it had once been a part of this school year, beating Lincoln 61-23 on Thursday, Jan. 30 at Osseo-Fairchild.

The Thunder, 2-15 overall, took control of the game late in the first half to lead 30-19 at halftime and held the Hornets to just four points in the second half.

O-F head coach Ben Mueller credits not only the tough defense but great free-throw shooting and rebounding as keys to the Thunder's win.

"We prevented a lot of second chance points by grabbing rebounds that's hurt in a lot of games this season," Mueller said.

O-F's defense held the Small Dairyland's leading scorer, Lincoln (3-14) junior Ava Cummings, well below her 17 points per game average at six points.

Ten players scored for OFHS led by Hailie Knudtson's 15 points and Myrisa Pettis' 11 points. Many of the Thunder's seven seniors got playing time and scratched the scorebook as well.

"Their leadership has been outstanding and I think that's due to the way they've stuck together and been together for so long," Mueller said. "They're what a senior class should be."

O-F's next game is Monday, Feb. 3 at home vs. Independence/Gilmanton with a tip time of 7:15 p.m.
