Burton D. Jahns, 90, Wabasha
The memorial service for Burton D. Jahns, 90, of Wabasha, MN will be at 1:30 P.M. on Saturday, October 3, 2015, at Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville, MN with Rev. Kim Cassidy officiating. A committal service and burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville. Mr. Jahns died peacefully on Monday, September 21, 2015 of natural causes at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center in Wabasha, where he had been a resident since 2011.
Burton D. Jahns was born on October 12, 1924 in Fillmore County, MN to Herman and Lydia (Stellmaker) Jahns. He grew up on the family farm, attended Spring Valley schools, graduating from Spring Valley H.S. in 1942 and then farmed with his family. Burton was married in 1946 in Wykoff, MN to Beverly Schunke. The couple farmed in rural Spring Valley and Wykoff before moving in 1957 to Stewartville, followed by a return to rural life in 1961 near High Forest, where they raised their family and continued to farm. Mr. Jahns was also employed by IBM in Rochester for 30 years until his retirement. Burton and Beverly were longtime active members of Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville. The Jahns moved to Wabasha in 2000, where they were members of Faith Lutheran Church. Beverly preceded Burton in death in 2004. Burton was remarried in 2007 to Ileen Franke in Wabasha, where they have made their home. Burton enjoyed fishing, tinkering on his machinery, music, time spent with family and ice cream.
Burton is survived by his wife, Ileen Franke of Wabasha and his children, Muriel (Ken) Gunderson of Harmony, MN, Duane of Wabasha, Dean (Carolyn) of Brooklyn Park, MN and Miriam (Brian) Hovey of Wabasha; 9 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly, his parents, 4 sisters, and 2 brothers. .
A time of visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday morning. The family suggests memorials to Lutheran Social Services.
