Interview with Wabasha Conservation Officer Marie Peterson

Marie Peterson is the new Conservation Officer for the Wabasha County area. She was originally from Spring Grove, Minnesota. She did her degree at Vermillion Community College in Ely, Minnesota. After that she went to Park Ranger Law Enforcement Academy, and did an internship with the Army Corp of Engineers for a season. After her training and on the ground experience Peterson was hired in Duluth for the Department of Natural Resources. Peterson and her fiancé Sam wanted to move closer to home, so they made the move to Wabasha. Growing up immersed in outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, and trapping shaped Peterson's deep connection to nature. Her childhood experiences have inspired her commitment to conservation and she feels a personal responsibility to protect wildlife and natural resources for future generations, including her own children one day. Understanding the delicate balance between human activity and conservation, Peterson emphasizes the importance of en-forcing outdoor regulations. Without oversight, activities like fishing and hunting can quickly become unsustainable, potentially threatening wildlife populations. As a Conservation Officer, Peterson's role goes beyond what people might imagine. "A lot of people probably think we're just sitting out in the woods," she says with a laugh, but her position en-compasses much more.
