Leo J. Meyer, 91, Wabasha

Leo J. Meyer, 91 of Wabasha, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2020, at Gundersen-Saint Elizabeth’s Nursing Home, Wabasha, MN.
Leo Meyer was born June 22, 1929, in Wabasha to John and Mary (Tushaus)
Meyer. He was a life-long area resident and attended school in Wabasha.
After school, he was drafted into the US Army and served during the Korean War where he was awarded a Purple Heart for being wounded in combat. After returning from the war, he went to work at Lakeside Packing of Plainview. Leo enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers and friends.
On October 22, 1966, he married Yvonne R. Kohn, daughter of Joseph and
Elizabeth (Miller) Kohn of Wabasha. After getting married, Leo went to work for the Wabasha County Highway Department where he worked until retirement.
Leo and Yvonne enjoyed camping and fishing in Eli and in the local area.
They went on lots of bus trips including to Alaska and Canada. Some of the highlight trips were going to Las Vegas, Branson, and Hawaii.
Leo was an active member of the St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha. He was also a longtime member of the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post #4086 where he enjoyed playing bingo and being in the honor guard.
Everyone knew Leo’s friendly smile and easy going attitude. When a job needed to get done, Leo was the first to get to it. He even scraped snow off his roof at 90 years old because he didn’t want to ask anyone to help and shoveled a path around the house so the mailman could take a shortcut.
He is survived by his wife Yvonne, sister Marian (Meyer) Miller, sister-in-law Eleanor (Lawrence) Meyer, and 23 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Mary (Tushaus) Meyer, infant son Bruce Meyer, brothers Lawrence and Vince Meyer, brother-in-law Fred Miller, and his mother and father-in-law Joseph and Elizabeth (Miller) Kohn.
A private funeral mass will be held at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha, with Reverend Father Glenn Frerichs officiating. Interment will be at St. Felix Cemetery, Wabasha. Military rites will be provided by members of the Wabasha American Legion Post #50, the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post #4086, and the MNARNG Honor Guard.
Memorials can be directed to DAV, 848 17th Street, E, Wabasha, MN 55981 or Catholic Charities of Southern MN, P.O. Box 379, Winona, MN 55987.
Services entrusted to Abbott Funeral Home & Crematory, Wabasha, MN. Words of sympathy or remembrance may be left at www.abbottfh.com
