The Mondovi Buffaloes football team battled against the Glenwood City Hilltoppers last Friday, Sept. 18. Although it was a rainy night, the two teams went head-to-head in a great fight with Mondovi securing the Dunn-St. Croix Conference win, 14-6.
As always the Buffaloes came out solid in the first quarter. Senior Greg Poeschel capped off a 65-yard drive with a touchdown run with 1:55 left in the first. Despite the unsuccessful extra-point attempt, the Buffaloes led the Hilltoppers 6-0.
The action of the second quarter saw both teams reach the end zone. The Hilltoppers successfully scored on a 28-yard pass from Nick Schone to Jake Kopacz. An unsuccessful extra-point attempt left the score tied 6-6.
The Buffaloes responded with a touchdown of their own when Poeschel ran it in from the 13-yard line. To top off the touchdown, Poeschel added a successful two-point conversion to make the score to 14-6.
Both teams’ defenses stood tall in the second half, allowing neither team to score. The Buffaloes secured the victory when Wyatt Olson recovered a fumble with less than two minutes to go.
Shane Van Roo led the Buffaloes in rushing with 96 yards on 23 attempts. Poeschel was 2-for-6 with 23 yards passing. Van Roo caught both receptions for 23 yards.
The Buffaloes (2-3 overall, 2-1 DSC) will be in action this Friday, Sept. 25, at home when they take on the undefeated Elk Mound Mounders in a DSC showdown.
