E-S volleyball moves to 2-4 in Dairyland Conference

The Eleva-Strum volleyball team improved its Dairyland Conference record to 2-4 last week with a win over Independence. The squad also headed to Whitehall last Thursday and hosted an tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Cards started the week off on a high note, defeating the Independence Indees 3-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Eleva-Strum had the lead in the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-18, but once the third came around the Indees took the lead just by a few points, beating the Cardinals 25-21. The fourth set was definitely a close call, but the Cardinals came out with the two-point victory, 25-23.
The statistical leaders for the night were Mackenzie Hutchins with 11 kills and 16 digs, Josie Olson with 10 kills, and Megan McLean with 27 set assists.
Later in the week the Cardinals took on the Whitehall Norse, on Thursday, Oct. 1, which was Whitehall’s Dig Pink night. The Norse defeated the Cardinals 3-0, the scores for the game being 25-16, 25-11, and 25-16. The Cardinals fell short quite a few points in the first set, and fell a little more behind in the second as well. Although defeated by the Norse, the Cardinals had a strong defensive stance. The statistical leaders of that night were Hutchins with four kills and eight digs, Olson with four kills, and McLean with 12 set assists and eight digs.
On Saturday, Oct. 3 Eleva-Strum hosted a varsity volleyball invitational. Participating teams included Plum City, Chippewa Falls McDonnell, Osseo-Fairchild and Augusta.
Starting off the day, Eleva-Strum defeated Plum City 2-1, game scores being 25-14, 10-25, and 16-14. The Cardinals had a pretty good lead in the first set, but fell short quite a bit in the second before coming up with the win in the third.
Next up was Chippewa Falls McDonnell, who defeated the Lady Cards 2-1 by scores of 23-25, 25-12, and 15-13. The first game was close, but then the Cardinals fell behind in the second set. McDonell then won the third set to take the match.
Later in the day, Eleva-Strum lost to Osseo-Fairchild 0-2, and Augusta 0-2. Against Osseo, the match scores were 25-15 and 25-7, and against Augusta the scores were 25-15 and 25-17.
After a long day of volleyball, the statistical leaders were Hutchins with 16 kills and 40 digs, McLean with 41 set assists, and Jenna Booth with 40 digs. The Cardinals placed fourth in the tournament.
Heading into this week’s matches, Eleva-Strum had a record of 5-16, and 2-4 in the conference. This week the Cardinals played the Melrose-Mindoro Mustangs on Tuesday, Oct. 6, and will play against the Augusta Beavers Thursday, Oct. 8.
