Lady Buffs fall in close game at Spring Valley

The Mondovi girls basketball team headed to Spring Valley for their lone game of the week on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Starting out the first half battling and struggling, the Lady Buffs put up a great amount of shots against Spring Valley’s defense. Miranda Lund was working the post for most of the varsity game, and the Lady Buffs held strong on the defensive end and only let the Cardinals score 17 in the first half.

Coming out of the locker room to start the second half, the Lady Buffs knew what they needed to get done. Free throws determined how close this game would be on both ends, as both teams were in foul trouble early. McKenzie Akina was 3-for-3 on free throws to help the Lady Buffs score 22 in the second half.  But the Cardinals also put up 22 points, and the Lady Buffs fell to the Cardinals by a close score of 39-35.

Leading scorers for the Lady Buffs were Akina with 11 points and Lund with eight.

Leading scorers for the Cardinals were Becky Fesenmaier with 20 and Ally Lee with eight.

The Mondovi girls have a busy week this week. The Lady Buffs hosted non-conference Holmen on Monday, Jan. 11, and came back for a Dunn-St. Croix Conference game vs. Durand at home the very next evening. The girls will also host Boyceville on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 16, for a doubleheader with the boys’ team.
