Mondovi drops first game of 2015 season to G-E-T

After riding out a rough 3-6 overall record with just one Dunn-St. Croix Conference win last season, the Mondovi football team is hoping to return to its winning ways in 2015.

But putting a mark in the win column is going to have to wait at least until this Friday as the Buffaloes dropped their home opener 14-0 in non-conference play with Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau on Friday, Aug. 21.

The game was a scoreless affair through the majority of the contest as both teams grappled for control. Mondovi’s offense struggled to find its way throughout the game, but the defense held firm until the fourth quarter.

That’s when G-E-T finally broke through, registering a four-yard rushing touchdown by Connor Kokott in the opening minute of the fourth to take the 6-0 lead. The second score came on another short run, this time by the Red Hawks’ Cody Gunderson, and his two-point conversion was good for a 14-0 lead that stood through the final horn.

The Mondovi offense was led by junior Shane Van Roo on the ground with 45 yards on 16 carries. Senior quarterback Greg Poeschel went 5-for-10 passing for 39 yards, connecting with senior tight end Blake Purdy four times for 36 yards total.

Mondovi will continue non-conference play at Saint Croix Central, now a member of the Middle Border Conference, this Friday, Aug. 28.
