Mondovi football falls to the Cardinals

The Mondovi Buffaloes (1-3 overall, 1-1 DSC) football team took on a flock of Spring Valley Cardinals (4-0, 2-0) last Friday, Sept. 11.
This game featured two teams that were undefeated in Dunn-St. Croix play up to that point. The winner of this game would take control of their conference destiny, but that team was not Mondovi as the host squad fell 21-0.
Yet the first quarter lived up to the hype as both teams battled to move the ball against the stout defenses.
Neither team scored in the first, and the second quarter was a similar story until Spring Valley found paydirt with just under one minute remaining in the half.
The Cardinals capped off a long drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Sean Bogerding to Logan Newton. They converted the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead going into halftime.
After a tough first half the Buffaloes came out in the second half determined to turn this game around.
Senior Sawyer Hayes started the Buffaloes off on the right foot in the third quarter with a 36-yard run on the first play of the half. However, Spring Valley’s defense stood tall and did not allow the Buffaloes to score. Much like the first half, the defense for both teams refused to give each other any momentum.
Spring Valley scored a decisive touchdown early in the fourth quarter when Bogerding snuck the ball in from the 1-yard line. A failed two-point conversion kept the score 14-0 in favor of the Cardinals with 9:07 left to play in the game. The Cardinals would add one more touchdown when Newton scored on a 3-yard run with one minute remaining.
Senior quarterback Greg Poeschel led the team with 61 yards rushing. Austin Fedie and Sawyer Hayes both contributed 51 yards each to the rushing total. Poeschel also finished 3-for-13 with 49 yards in the air and one interception. Blake Purdy had two catches for 24 yards and Hayes had one reception for 25 yards.
The Mondovi Buffaloes will be on the road to take on the Glenwood City Hilltoppers in another Dunn-St. Croix match-up this Friday, Sept. 18.
