Mondovi football moves up DSC standings with win at Colfax
by Beth Kraft
The Mondovi football team grabbed a convincing 44-26 victory at Colfax on Friday night, Oct. 2, boosting its Dunn-St. Croix Conference record to 3-2 on the season to place the Buffaloes just behind undefeated Elk Mound and Spring Valley.
Mondovi had a bit of a slow start against the Vikings, entering a scoreless first quarter while host Colfax got on the board for a 6-0 lead. The Buffaloes found the end zone in the second quarter when Garrett Kees caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Greg Poeschel and Sawyer Hayes tacked on the two-point conversion run for the 8-6 advantage that stood going into halftime.
What looked to be a close contest then got out of hand in a hurry as the floodgates opened for the Mondovi offense in the second half.
The Buffaloes notched three touchdowns in the third quarter, two on big run plays including a 64-yard scamper by Poeschel, and one on a pass play from Poeschel to Blake Purdy for the 15-yard score. Hayes notched the two-point conversion on all three scores to put the Buffaloes up 32-12 to end the third.
Mondovi then added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to all but cancel out the offensive efforts of Colfax, which had three second-half touchdowns.
The Mondovi defense did run into some trouble defending Colfax’s passing game, as quarterback Jarrod Rudi completed 10 of 14 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns.
Poeschel was 3-for-5 for 57 yards and two touchdowns, one to Purdy and the other to Kees, though he also threw two picks.
Poeschel also led the Buffaloes on the ground with 111 yards on just four attempts, complete with two rushing touchdowns. Kees added 36 yards on 12 carries and Hayes had 29 yards in the winning effort.
Mondovi (3-4 overall) will step away from its DSC schedule this week as the Buffaloes host Unity in a non-conference match-up for Homecoming on Friday night, Oct. 9.
