The Mondovi Police Department recently began offering local residents a few new services to help meet the community’s needs.

Mondovi tip line established as MPD offers up new services

Area residents who might have a lead they feel law enforcement personnel should know about, public safety concerns or questions now have a new way to relay and obtain information.

A tip line is now in place at the Mondovi Police Department, and Officer in Charge Scott Smith is encouraging the public to leave messages on the non-emergency line, available 24/7 at (715) 926-4443.

The police department will now also serve legal documents to individuals and is bringing back vehicle registrations to provide the public with local options for those services.

Smith said the new efforts are ideas he’s hand in mind to implement in Mondovi for awhile to broaden the MPD’s offerings to local taxpayers.

“It’s something that we can do to help people out,” he said.

The new tip line gives people a way to get in touch with a police officer for non-emergency purposes without having to provide a great deal of information via the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department’s dispatch line or having their name and phone number announced over the police scanner.

“People kind of get turned off by that,” said Smith.

Those with emergency calls should still dial 911; non-emergency reports that require prompt assistance or response should still call the MPD’s dispatch line through the sheriff’s department at (715) 926-4423.

The MPD’s new paper service option is another assistance measure Smith felt was needed in the community to add a local option for serving various court documents, such as divorce papers and eviction notices from landlords.

“We’ve never really had a procedure in place,” he said.

Going local will also come with a price break. Smith said the MPD will charge a $25 flat fee for paper service, which is less than the county charges.

Vehicle registration service is also making a comeback in Mondovi for vehicles weighing 8,000 pounds or less. The MPD will take payment by check or money order, Smith said.

Both document service and vehicle registration is offered through the MPD any time an officer is on duty.

Smith said he hopes the new services will save people the trip to Eau Claire, Alma or Durand for the same options.

“It’s just good PR work,” said Smith of working to build up relations between the MPD and the public.
