On Tuesday, Dec. 2, the Gilmanton girls basketball team traveled to Eleva-Strum to play their conference opener.
Both teams started the game out slow, ending the first quarter tied at two points apiece. At the beginning of the second quarter, the Cardinals picked up their game. The Lady Panthers could not work around the Cardinals’ defense or get their shots to fall, resulting in a 41-27 loss for Gilmanton.
Julia Branger led the team with 10 points, followed by Morgan Bork with six, Makayla Saul and Lexie Severson with three points each, Gabrielle Saul with two, and Jordyn Bloom pitched in with a made free throw.
The girls then hosted their first home game of the season on Friday, Dec. 5, facing off with Eau Claire Immanuel.
Both teams came out strong, ending the first quarter tied at 15. The Lancers came out strong the rest of the game, and the Panthers could not shut down the Lancers’ shooting from outside, resulting in a 72-29 loss for the home squad.
Severson led the Gilmanton scoring drive with 12 points, Branger added seven points, Bork and Bloom both had four, and Hovey pitched in two.
The Lady Panthers’ next game will be another Small Dairyland Conference game at Alma against the Alma/Pepin Eagles on Thursday, Dec. 11.
