Rollover crash near Fountain City injures two; speed, drugs and alcohol were factors, police say

 

A one-vehicle rollover crash that occurred around 3 a.m. on Sunday morning, March 13, east of Fountain City in the Town of Cross resulted in injuries for two out of four people involved.

According to the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department, 19-year-old Jordan Smith of Winona, Minn., and three passengers, Jay Schuring, 20, of Waumandee, Cory Kirchoff, 22, of Fountain City and a 15-year-old female from Winona, Minn., were traveling southbound on County Road M just off State Highway 95.

An investigation by police indicates that Smith lost control of the 2001 Ford Escape and entered the southbound ditch, striking a sign and rolling the vehicle over several times. One of the occupants was ejected from the SUV.

Schuring was transported by Mayo 1 helicopter with unknown injuries. Kirchoff received transport via Winona Ambulance for non-life threatening injuries to Winona Hospital.

Smith and the 15-year-old girl denied medical transport.

Also during the investigation police concluded that speed, alcohol and controlled substances were contributing factors in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department.

Also assisting at the scene were the Fountain City First Responders and Fire Department.
