Shirley Mae (Rogness) Olson, 90, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, at Mayo Clinic Health System Hospital in Eau Claire, Wis., on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018.
She was born on Jan. 3, 1928, in La Crosse, Wis., the daughter of Francis and Agnes (Larson) Rogness.
Shirley will be remembered as a woman who had a deep and enduring faith in Christ. She was loved by all who knew her, and she welcomed everyone she met with a warm smile and loving heart. In addition to working on the family farm alongside her husband, Thorwald, she worked at Northwest Wisconsin HomeCare for more than 20 years, retiring at 80 years old. She was also a proud and faithful volunteer with the Speed Transport and Escort Protocol (STEP) Force at Luther/Mayo Hospital, serving from May 12, 2004, until Feb. 12, 2018—nearly 7,900 hours total. She thoroughly enjoyed her fellow volunteers, making frequent reference to the fun she had with the “Thursday afternoon crew” or the things she learned from her “Monday morning peeps.” She described joining STEP Force as one of the best decisions she ever made.
She is survived by a daughter, Joann of Victoria, Texas; a son, David (Michelle) of Eau Claire; three sisters-in-law, Beverly (Francis Jr.) Rogness, Priscillamae (Gordon) Olson, and Ardis (Haakon) Olson; nine nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews; a granddaughter, Vivienne, who was the light of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thorwald; her parents, Francis and Agnes; brother, Francis Jr..
The family would like to thank the staff of Mayo Clinic Health System-Eau Claire for their thoughtful and attentive care during her brief stay. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mayo Clinic Health System Eau Claire Volunteer Services (STEP Force), Mayo Clinic Health System Hospice, or Wycliffe Bible Translators.
