Brad Kuehn walks up the hill along the old highway route north out of Kellogg that once carried the roadway over the Milwaukee Road railroad tracks and the Zumbro River.
A good look at Old Highway 61 south of Kellogg, with its nine-foot lanes and “lips” that made driving the road rather tricky…and often quite dangerous.

Sadly, some of the old highway route has fallen on, shall we say, “hard times”—such as this short stretch on the edge of town that is now used for the city’s compost site. The new highway can be seen cutting across the picture in the background.
This little bit of concrete is one of the last remaining examples of the old eight-foot-wide roadway that was Route 3. This shot is south of Winona.—State of Minnesota file
This old stretch of Highway 61 is still in use just south of Kellogg. Here, Brad Kuehn goes for a walk along the 18-foot-wide roadway, typical of the early highway that was still part of 61 into the 1970’s.
