An eagle was on hand this weekend to greet visitors to the opening weekend of SOAR with the Eagles. Sometimes the guest got a hug…and sometimes a nibble on the head!

There was a good turnout Sunday for the “Bats of the World” show at the Eagle Center’s new Main Street building.

And the crowd for the Eagle Education and Feeding program at the Eagle Center was, as it always seems to be, large Sunday. It was a full house, in fact.

A woman from the crowd gives this rose-breasted cockatoo, which The Birdman had just released, a dollar bill…which he promptly flew back with to and deposited into a plastic Condor Fund box. The bit was part of the weekend’s Birdman show.

Local artist Sue Degnan Mundy stands beside her latest work and the major part of the National Eagle Center’s newest exhibit, “Discover the Refuge.” This three-dimensional wall mural on the second floor of the Eagle Center took her four months to paint and represents the Upper Mississippi National Fish and Wildlife Refuge located just across the river from Wabasha.

John James Audubon (April 26, 1785-January 27, 1851) was an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. He was notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats.

Audubon's major work, a color-plate book entitled The Birds of America (1827–1839), is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. Audubon even showed up for Friday evening’s SOAR With the Eagles Kickoff Party. His modern day name is Brian “Fox” Ellis.

The front of this Wenonah canoe juts right out of the Wildlife Refuge mural on the second floor of the National Eagle Center. It is part of the mural shown on Page 1 this week.

The sheer size of this condor at Sunday’s Birdman show at St. Felix Auditorium amazed the large crowd.

The crowd at Sunday’s Soar With the Eagles Birdman Show at St. Felix Auditorium listens to “The Birdman of Las Vegas.” Though the gym wasn’t quite full Sunday, it was overflowing for Saturday’s programs.

The condor goes on the prowl in the St. Felix Gym Sunday.
