Mondovi’s new Equine Team readies for competition

The Mondovi Equine Team—consisting of (left to right) Alissa Hopp, Brooke Vinck, Autumn Morrow, Emma Sandberg and Kira Lee—is the School District of Mondovi’s first-ever school-sponsored club for horsemanship competitors. The five girls hold a variety of past equine experience, from Western to English, and hope to make a splash in their first year of WIHA competition. The team had a successful introductory show at Glenwood City on Oct. 8 and will compete in Eau Claire this weekend, Oct. 15-16.

Kira Lee (right) gave teammate Emma Sandberg a few pointers at a recent skills clinic. The team organized multiple clinics to prepare for this month’s competition season, but much of the practice is left up to the individual rider.

Members of Mondovi’s Equine Team paused for a group shot prior to their skills clinic on Sept. 25. The girls are excited to represent Mondovi as a school-sponsored middle/high school club and could be in the running for a bid to the WIHA State Show later this month.

Seventh-grader Emma Sandberg practiced the flag race, which requires a two-person team to transport a flag around the ring by inserting it into and taking it out of a bucket without dropping the flag while riding for time.

Alissa Hopp, a MHS sophomore, practiced her barrel racing skills. Hopp says she has been riding since she was little, but her abilities have more recently improved greatly since she began putting more time in to practice.

Senior Brooke Vinck, who competes in the LBW Rodeo circuit, practiced a barrel racing run. Vinck said she was excited to see the equine events she loves earn school sponsorship this year.
